The Unique Gift of Life

Early morning at Davis Islands in Tampa, Florida by NoShoes

It has been more than two months into the new year. Have you already made your new year resolutions and following them faithfully? I believe many would have resolved to be a better person this year or to have a better health. Or do you resolve to improve your relationships with loved ones and people around you? Or could it be to be more successful and wealthy this year? More spiritual and to help more people this year? Or could it be what I want to share with you in the following?

I remember reading a quotation in one of the blogs, while dropping entrecards at the start of the new year, that goes something like this, “new year is a time for us to redeem ourselves; to set things right and to right any wrongdoings and to relive our lives.”

Did you put up a quotation like this in your blog at the start of the new year? If you did, I would love to give you the credit by linking back to your blog. Do let me know in the comment.

The quotation got me in deep reflection. I thought initially that new year is indeed a good time when we can start everything on a fresh note. Then again, it is only true to certain extent. Is new year the only time when we should collectively reflect upon our lives in the past year? 365 days is a long stretch of period; do you still remember exactly what you had done last year at this time?

The thing is why do we have to wait for another 365 days to pass before we start reflecting on our lives again. Who says that resolution can only be made yearly and before the start or at the start of a new year?

I am grateful for the fact that I am still alive and writing this at this very moment. I am grateful to be still breathing in the air that you are breathing. I have learnt that if I wanted to do any good, I have to be alive in the first place. What? You knew that simple truth a long time ago? Alright, I admit I am slow in some areas; better late than never.

I have reminded myself almost every night to be grateful that I am still alive. What is the meaning of being alive? To me, everyday I get to wake up in the morning, I’m bless with a gift – the unique gift of life. This gift of life continues to allow me to make a difference in the lives of others and to correct whatever wrongs done in yesterday. The unlimited potential of doing good.

Quoting a paragraph from the book, ‘Make The Impossible Possible,’ by Bill Strickland, “Sometimes, the hardest thing about living an exceptional life is realizing what it means, in simplest and most essential terms, to be alive. Just waking up to the fact that you are alive – that each day and each moment you’re on the planet gives you once-in-a-lifetime chance to build the future you dream of …

If I can make life easier for at least one person a day, that will be 365 people a year and around 13,000 people in my lifetime; assuming the average lifespan of a man is 70 years old. Not very impressive but not bad also. Of course, these numbers can be reduced drastically if someone up there decides that my time is up today. One must really make full use of his or her time given and live it to the fullest!

As I took in another breath, I am filled with gratitude. Time is bad now especially with the financial crisis happening everywhere and it may have taken its toiled on you, but to be alive, you are open to greater possibilities and potentials. It will get better! Quoting something John Gokongwei, Jr. said, “The important thing to know is that life will always deal us a few bad cards. But we have to play those cards the best we can. And we can play to win!

Last but not least, I would like to wish everyone a Happy Valentine’s Day. Yes, it is that time of the year again where lovers will re-pledge their loves for their loved ones. Take this day to renew your vow towards your loved one but always remind yourself that everyday is a Valentine’s Day.

Never Judge a Book by Its Cover

In every man there is something wherein I may learn of him, and in that I am his pupil.” — Ralph Waldo Emerson

By looking at the face on the right, can you tell if the man is good or bad? I wouldn’t want to even make a guess. Who am I to judge anyone anyway. How often have we heard the quote, “never judge a book by its cover?” And yet more often than not, when we see someone or a scenario, we tend to take pleasure and jump in quickly to judge the person or the scenario. I guess it is only human nature and it takes years of practice before one can learn to see things in an objective manner.

In one of the shows which I watched previously, a father was having a conversation with his son. The father said, “If you keep looking at your feet, your scope of view will forever be around your feet only. But if you raise your head to look at the horizon, your scope of view will be magnified many times and you will have new perspective or view.

Isn’t that very true? Judging people and scenario upon first impression is like looking around one’s feet; what one see will be limited. Not to mention that one already knew the size of one’s feet. One will quickly jump to the conclusion that one knows everything that one needs to know already.

However, when one reminds oneself that he/she could be wrong, one immediately move into the horizon view. Now there is more information that one needs to process and one’s eventual conclusion will be of more depth and completed.

A few years back I was first enlightened about this from the book ‘7 Habits of Highly Effective People’ by Stephen R. Covey (I hope my memory didn’t fail me). In one part of the book, a scenario described of a man in a train on a certain day and sitting near to him was a father and his son. The boy was making a terrible racket in the train but his father just sat beside his son quietly without stopping him.

The man finally lost it and asked the father to discipline the boy and to prevent him from creating so much noise in the train. The father said, “I very sorry that my boy is creating such a terrible racket in the train. The boy’s mother just passed away and he didn’t know how to handle it.

What do you think was the reaction of the man? Just like how you have reacted probably. So we can see that an understanding was reached in this scenario and somehow the terrible racket that the boy was creating seems somewhat more bearable.

I have been using this story to remind myself to be more understanding and to always do my best to look at things from a telescopic view.

Have you ever been in such a situation whereby you misunderstood someone or jump immediately to the conclusion, only to realize it later that you were actually wrong? Please feel free to share with me and enlighten me from my ignorance.

Wesourze, Thank you for the Support

When was the last time your website or blog was down? I hope you don’t remember because it had been so long ago. A few weeks ago I was troubled by ‘nightmares.’ It first started when my blog was down for almost 24 hours.

I sent in a ticket to the support at the hosting service but it wasn’t any help. It took them ages to reply. Alright, I understand that they may be looking into the problem and I would greatly appreciate if they could send me a personal email (not those kind of auto-responses) to acknowledge that they received my email and that they were looking into the issue. And it would be great help for them to keep me update with the issue. That was the reason why some of you could not access my blog on two particular days.

I was very frustrated with them as that was the first issue with them; I have had similar issues with them before. And so I finally lost my patience with them and reacted very rudely to them. I admit I was at fault; no matter how frustrated and angry we are at someone, we must never be rude to the person. My sincere public apology.

Lesson learned. However, I was fortunate to have the support of the team from Wesourze Pte Ltd, Web Design. In fact we have been friends for 5-6 years now. They are a very dedicated team of guys who spent a lot of time and money getting themselves educated with the business and their business has been growing steadily over the years and with a lot of good testimonials and customers being referred to them by previous clients. Need I say more about their services?

I have my website hosted with them ever since I started 2 years ago but they were using other hosting service back then. Now they provide their own hosting service. They helped me to migrate my website to their own server a few weeks ago after the incident.

They have helped me a lot in my hosting and design issues. Whenever I have some issues with my site. I will always buzz them for help. And they have always walked the extra miles.

Just in case you are thinking, “is this a paid posting?” Sorry to disappoint you, this is not a paid posting; I don’t get anything from Wesourze Pte Ltd, Web Design. This is the simplest way I can think of, to thank them for the great help and service they rendered to me.

If you need some help with your design or advise on internet marketing stuff, you can head over to their website and give them a buzz. Let them know you heard about them from Symphony of Love and maybe they can give you a discount. 🙂

Wordless Wednesday: Orchids at the National Orchid Garden in the Singapore Botanical Garden

The following photos are orchids taken in the National Orchid Garden in the Singapore Botanical Garden with a Sony Ericsson Cyber-shot camera phone. So do pardon me for the low quality. There are 7 photos altogether, please give it a little time to load.

More Wordless Wednesday.

Yes I know it is supposed to be wordless. Please allow me to say a few words. A close friend of mine had just gotten marry last Friday. On Thursday, we were still driving around, looking for a suitable place for photo taking on his wedding day. We had planned to go to a few locations actually but due to some hiccups, we managed to explore only one location and that is the Singapore Botanical Garden.

The Singapore Botanical Garden sits on a 32 hectares of land in Tanglin, which is very near Orchard Road and the heart of the City. The Singapore Botanical Garden can be accessed easily by public transportation.

This trip has certainly brought back a lot of memories for me. The last time I was in the Singapore Botanical Garden, I was only 6-7 years old; that was more than 20 years ago. However, it didn’t seem to change much. If you are a nature lover, you must definitely pay a visit to the Singapore Botanical Garden. You don’t have to pay any fee. I am very sure you can find a spot inside the Singapore Botanical Garden that will suit you.

If you want to go into the National Orchid Garden, you need to pay a fee of $5. Trust me, it will be very much worth it. We spent at least 1 hour exploring the National Orchid Garden. According to Wikipedia, there are more than 1,000 species and 2,000 hybrids of orchids. I have only taken 7 species. 😀

Paying It Forward at Symphony of Love

Symphony of LoveHave you watched the movie ‘Pay It Forward?’ In 2000, Catherine Ryan Hyde’s novel ‘Pay It Forward’ was published and adapted into the Warner Brothers film ‘Pay It Forward.’

Is it possible for one idea to change the world? I believe it can. In the movie ‘Pay It Forward,’ an 11-year-old schoolboy in Las Vegas, Nevada is given a class project to complete by his social studies teacher. His task is to come up with a plan that will change the world through direct action. Trevor then comes up with the plan to “pay it forward” by doing a good deed for three people who must in turn each do good deeds for three other people.

This concept, in fact, is not new; according to Wikipedia, the concept was described by Benjamin Franklin, in a letter to Benjamin Webb dated April 22, 1784. The term “pay it forward” was coined, or at least popularized, by Robert A. Heinlein in his book Between Planets, published in 1951.

In 2006, I created an eBook Symphony of Love, which is a pictorial eBook of love quotations. I have compiled 365 love quotations into this eBook and every love quotation comes with a picture of flower.

From the birth of the eBook comes the website Symphony of Love, which is created with the initial motive to share with people the wisdom in love quotations. The website later expands to share with people other areas in love through stories and articles, which I received in my past email. Symphony of Love further evolves and aims to share with people reflections in life. I hope that readers can find love and inspiration through Symphony of Love.

Today, I would like to bring forward the concept of ‘paying it forward’ in Symphony of Love. I have been selling the Symphony of Love, Pictorial eBook of Love Quotations for $6.95 almost ever since it was created. However, starting today, I would be giving it away for free. The only thing that you need to do to download a free copy of it is to ‘Pay It Forward.’

No, I do not mean forwarding the copy that you downloaded to your family and friends. Like the concept, after you downloaded a copy of Symphony of Love, you must “pay it forward” by doing a good deed for three people; what you are gonna do, is entirely up to you. Simple enough? You can have a preview of the eBook below:

If you like, you can post the same slide show and a link to this post.

Last but not least. Wishing everyone a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year. Let us always remember the spirit of loving, giving and sharing.
