Strangers are family you have yet to come to know

Many years ago, someone told me that strangers are friends you have yet to come to know. It was an ‘aha’ moment back then. How true isn’t it? ‘Stranger’ becomes a temporary word used to describe someone we do not know by name. If we know the name of a person, that person would become an associate or an acquaintance or in a more intimate term – a friend.

If strangers are friends you have yet to come to know, how would you have treated strangers or people you are meeting for the first time? Would you have treated strangers with the same intimacies that you used for treating friends? With love, kindness and respect.

Some people would have said that they don’t treat all friends the same way; it depends on the closeness of the friends. And some people would say, “We can choose a friend. If we don’t like the person, we can choose not to be associated with him/her again.” Indeed, when we are choosing friends, we have a choice to a large extent. We can just let the person we dislike be remained as a working associate with no personal relation other than work.

Then recently, while I was reading Mitch Albom’s book, ‘The Five People You Meet in Heaven,’ he mentioned in his book, “Strangers … are just family you have yet to come to know.” Mitch Albom has brought the meaning of ‘stranger’ to a higher level – to one which we do not have a choice.

Just as the saying goes, “one cannot choose ones father and mother or siblings or relatives.” Everyone comes as a package when you were born. Over the past 33 years, I am grateful to be showered with unconditional love and compassion whether it is from my parents, siblings and relative.

For one who has experience unconditional love and compassion from family, should I not bestow the same unconditional love and compassion to strangers especially if strangers are family I have yet to come to know? Mitch Albom’s words put a new meaning to the word ‘stranger.’ A deeper and more intimate meaning.

Quoting something from Mitch Albom’s book, ‘The Five People You Meet in Heaven, “… there are no random acts. That we are all connected. That you can no more separate one life from another than you can separate a breeze from the wind.

If Strangers are family you have yet to come to know, how would you be treating them? With the same unconditional love and compassion?

Earth Hour 2009 Signifies a New Start

Earth Hour 2009Earth Hour 2009 was a resounding success. According to Earthhour.org, “… over 4,000 cities and towns in 88 countries, hundreds of millions of people have “voted earth” in the world’s largest demonstration of public concern about climate change.

I had not switched off all the lights in my house last night. However, that didn’t mean I voted for global warming; especially not after seeing some of the natural calamities that had happened in the World for the past years. Some would say that not all of these natural calamities were the direct results of Global Warming. I believe that Global Warming or climate change had indirectly caused these natural calamities over the past years.

Many lives were killed and people lost their families. Not only that, a good numbers were also displaced from their homes.

I have also observed how the climate has changed greatly all over the World; with winters colder than usual in some places and summer hotter than usual in other places. Not to mention the flooding in some areas and the terrible droughts in other areas. I understand that flooding in some areas occurs because of the usual monsoon season every year but the question is, has the changed in the climate worsens the flooding?

Even close at home in Singapore, the weather over the past years has also become more and more unpredictable. I remember those years back in the 80s, the weather in March would start to get very hot with little rainfall. The hot weather would continue till around August and cooler weather would prevail from August all the way till October and November. Then it would be the monsoon season with lots of rainfall all the way till February. Pardon me, if there are any inaccuracies as these were from my observation.

Now, we are almost into April and it has been raining quite a lot these past weeks. Before that the weather was so hot and dry that every where I went, I saw grasses and leaves turning brown. There was also a record high of bush fires.

It was in the same time that we were having the deadliest blaze in Australia with death toll predicted to exceed 200. What about the wildlife and the damages to Planet Earth? Yes, it was the work of an arsonist. But could the hot and dry climate be a partner in crime?

Earth Hour 2009Earth Hour 2009 has just ended. However, it signifies the start of our first baby step towards healing Planet Earth. Earth Hour 2009 is important to create the awareness, to educate people of Global warming and to unite the human race for a common cause that goes beyond races, cultures and differences. However, even more important is what we are doing everyday.

I strongly believe that we have to continue to take conscious steps in our daily lives to stop this Global warming and climate change issue. 60 minutes were just the starting point for us to start taking proactive measures in our daily lives to create a difference for tomorrow.

I Forgive You

I forgive youDo you still remember the post I did on Forgiveness? Gandhi said, “The weak can never forgive. Forgiveness is the attribute of the strong.” This is one of the greatest forgiveness quotes. Indeed, it takes a strong person and a big heart to forgive. It has been a common misconception that forgiving someone means that the other person ‘win.’ However, forgiving someone actually put us in the ‘winning’ position.

Often time you have heard people saying, “How could I forgive him so easily for what he has done to me” or “I couldn’t let the matter rest so easily, I must get back to him.” The intense negative feelings associated in these statement are enough to devour you from within. Anger and hatred are very intense negative feelings that eat you slowly from within, draining away all your positive energy.

From Mitch Albom’s book, ‘The Five People You Meet in Heaven,’ he wrote, “… Holding anger is a poison. It eats you from inside. We think that hating is a weapon that attacks the person who harmed us. But hatred is a curved blade. And the harm we do, we do to ourselves.” How true isn’t it? Remember the times when you are angry or hated someone? The more intense your anger or hatred, the more it hurts from within you, isn’t it?

The truth of the fact is that we need to forgive. Forgiving doesn’t mean to condone with the act of the other person. It simply releases us from the negative feelings and allow us to take control from within and in return you will receive untold peace and happiness as what Robert Muller said.

Do yourself a favor today; give yourself the gift of forgiveness and to let go of whatever negative feelings within you and fill it up with love instead. And as mentioned in the post, Forgiveness, “It is the best gift you can give to yourself and you can benefit greatly from it too.

Wordless Wednesday: Mushroom or Fungus?

More Wordless Wednesday.

I saw these little fellows while I was on my way to pick up my brother from work yesterday. Yes, I know, these could be pretty common in your place but I don’t get to see these growing everywhere in Singapore.

The interesting thing is, along the whole stretch of grasses, only a little stretch of it have these growing. I guess this is the beauty of nature – so random and unpredictable at time. Anyone knows the actual name of these? Mushrooms? Fungus? According to Wikipedia, “A mushroom is the fleshy, spore-bearing fruiting body of a fungus, typically produced above ground on soil or on its food source.

The Meaning of Life

Fallingwater designed by Frank Lloyd Wright

The above architecture is that of the Fallingwater designed by Frank Lloyd Wright in 1935 as a nature retreat for Edgar J. Kaufmann Sr, which is probably also deemed as one of America’s extraordinary houses.

What does a renown house like the Fallingwater has anything to do with the meaning of life? To you and I, the connection may not be so direct. However, to Frank Lloyd Wright, could the meaning of his life be, ‘to create masterpieces like the Fallingwater.’ Or did he give his life meaning by creating masterpieces like the Fallingwater?

In Viktor E. Frankl‘s book, ‘Man’s Search For Meaning,’ he said that a lot of people are going through life asking, ‘what is the meaning of life,’ when they should be giving their lives meaning by what they are doing everyday. Previously I was also constantly asking myself what is the meaning of life and it was like a dog chasing its own tail; I was going round and round in circle.

Then what I read in Viktor’s book made sense to me. When one is searching for the meaning of life, one is not in control of whatever life throws at one. However, when one gives his/her life meaning, one is in control of whatever he/she does. Then what meaning should one gives to his/her life?

In Bill Strickland‘s book, ‘Make the Impossible Possible,’ he mentioned, “… a good life isn’t something you wait for, or chase after, or try to possess; it’s something you must create, moment by moment, on the foundation of your dreams.” What Bill said resonates with what Viktor had mentioned in his book isn’t it?

The connecting dots are then in the dreams that each individual holds. In so speaking, there is a need to know what are one’s dreams. Failing to know one’s dreams in life will make it impossible to live a fulfilled and happy life. Then how does one know his/her dreams? The question is, ‘what are we passionate about in life?’ Found out what we are passionate about and then build our dreams based on our passion.

Now, “What is the meaning are you giving to life?”
