Sarah McLachlan’s Angel in City of Angels

This is another one of my favorite songs which I would like to share with you all. Angel by Sarah McLachlan from the original sound track of City of Angels. Sarah McLachlan has a very unique voice and she brings out the song beautifully. Take a break and listen to this song while you read the lyrics.

“I would rather have had one breath of her hair, one kiss from her mouth, one touch of her hand, than eternity without it.” – City of Angels

Sarah McLachlan – Angel

Spend all your time waiting for that second chance
For the break that will make it OK
There’s always some reason to feel not good enough
And it’s hard at the end of the day
I need some distraction or a beautiful release
Memories seep from my veins
Let me be empty and weightless and maybe
I’ll find some peace tonight

In the arms of the Angel far away from here
From this dark, cold hotel room, and the endlessness that you fear
You are pulled from the wreckage of your silent reverie
You’re in the arms of the Angel; may you find some comfort here

So tired of the straight line, and everywhere you turn
There’s vultures and thieves at your back
The storm keeps on twisting, you keep on building the lies
That you make up for all that you lack
It don’t make no difference, escaping one last time
It’s easier to believe
In this sweet madness, oh this glorious sadness
That brings me to my knees

In the arms of the Angel far away from here
From this dark, cold hotel room, and the endlessness that you fear
You are pulled from the wreckage of your silent reverie
In the arms of the Angel; may you find some comfort here

You’re in the arms of the Angel; may you find some comfort here

Wordless Wednesday: Elegant Orchid

orchid

Orchid is one of my favorite flowers. Orchid happens to be the national flower of Singapore also. The orchid variety, Vanda Miss Joaquim was chosen as the national flower on April 15, 1981. Vanda Miss Joaquim was chosen as Singapore’s national flower from among 40 other contenders, including some 30 orchids. It was selected particularly because of its hardy and resilient qualities and its ability to bloom throughout the year. These are characteristics which reflect Singapore’s quest for progress and excellence in all aspects of life.

The picture above is not the variety Vanda Miss Joaquim.

Bloggers Unite for World AIDS Day on December 1st

Bloggers UniteDecember 1st is the World AIDS Day 2008. There was a TV series being produced in Singapore, in conjunction to the World AIDS Day 2008 on December 1st. In the TV series, the leading actor was infected with AIDS through a single account of unsafe casual sex. The TV series attempted to raise the awareness of AIDS by informing the viewers to be faithful to a single sex partner and not to indulge in casual sex. Fortunately, the leading actor eventually gained the support of his family and friends.

This leads me to the questions, “How many people infected with AIDS can be forgiven by their family” and “How many of them have gotten support from their family and friends eventually?” I certainly hope the answers are as heartening as the case portrayed in the TV series. However, I understand that, I for once can be part of the heartening answers. As what Gandhi said, “Be the change you want to see in the World.” The good news is, you too can join me in this change.

Over the weekend, there was a special report on AIDS in the newspaper and there is a particularly disturbing headline which read, “HIV infection rates in Singapore have spiked, rising tenfold from 42 in 1991 to 423 in 2007.” While in Thailand, they have fallen from 143,000 to 17,000.

According to the report, “Education, awareness and safe sex helped in Thailand. So did easy access to generic drugs that can keep people with HIV healthy for many years.” In Singapore, without subsidies, the medication can amount to more than $1,000 a month. HIV patients either have to smuggle cheaper generic drugs from Thailand, or do without medication and there are cases where patients just give up and wait to die. Can we just leave people to die?

There was a move by the Singapore government recently, to provide HIV testing to all patients aged 21 and above who are admitted to the six public hospitals here by the end of the years. Patients are allowed to opt out of the test. This strategic move by the government aims to identify more HIV-positive patients in the early stages of the disease. Would this move be effective in getting people to opt for the voluntary testing but without availability of treatment?

Under the current scheme, HIV patients can use up to $550 from their Medisave accounts monthly for their HIV medication. But patients here pay $353 and $511 while their counterparts in Thailand and China pay only $65 and between $200 and $300 for patented drugs respectively. “These prices are well beyond what HIV patients here – mostly from lower socioeconomic backgrounds – can afford,” according to the report.

On one account, a part-time cashier, who believes she was infected by a former boyfriend, had to be hospitalised for HIV-related complications such as pneumonia. She used up almost all of her $7,000 in her Medisave account and said that she wouldn’t be around, if not for her social worker who told her how to get drugs from Thailand.

I tend to agree with one of the doctors who pointed out the irony that on one hand we promote Singapore as a medical hub but on the other hand, we are telling our HIV patients to go elsewhere for treatment.

It is ashamed that Singapore signed the 2006 UNAids declaration to scale up universal access to HIV prevention, treatment care and support by 2010. “I don’t think we have made any headway since. We are the only developed nation which does not provide free or subsidised medication for HIV patients, ” according to Mr. Brenton Wong, former vice-president of non-government organisation Action For Aids. He brought out another point, “Patients won’t come forward to be tested when they know they won’t get treatment. Why risk the discrimination?

You may not agree with this, but the discrimination HIV patients are experiencing is something we can never hope to understand by putting ourselves in their shoes.

Besides having treatment made available to HIV patients, also important are education and awareness programs to the general public so they can learn more about AIDS. And hopefully with education and awareness, the general public can eventually remove their discrimination against HIV patients.

As the saying goes, “Prevention is better than cure,” we can play our parts to be faithful to one partner and not have casual sex regardless of safe or unsafe.

How is the AIDS support and treatment in your country? Are they facing the same problem as in Singapore? Do the HIV-positive patients face similar discrimination as in the HIV-positive patients here?

*Updated March 28, 2009: I really should have updated this sooner. Singapore is already making plan to subsidise HIV patients for their medication.

Wordless Wednesday: Unknown Plant Growing on Tree Barks

I was on my way to my sister’s house today when I saw this growing on the barks of a tree. Does anyone know the name for this? Is it a kind of fern?

Spread the Christmas Spirit and Positive Wishes

In about 40 days, depending on when you are reading this post, it will be Christmas. Christmas has been and will always be my favorite festival. Why, you may ask? I’ll be getting a Nintendo’s Wii Console, a brand new and latest Apple 3G iPhone and a paid holiday to any snowing destination of my choice. I’m just kidding. I won’t be getting any of these gifts.

I am not really keen on a Nintendo’s Wii Console as I don’t play much of games, whether it’s computer game or TV game. I am also happy with my Sony Ericsson phone and given the choice, I may prefer the Sony Ericsson latest Xperia X1 over the Apple 3G iPhone. A paid holiday sounds more attractive to me right now but no I’m not getting any paid holiday.

I was thinking recently, “Why is Christmas so special to me?” It seemed that every time I asked myself that question, almost every time the same memories flashed in my mind. I grew up listening to Alvin and the Chipmunks’ Christmas songs; one of the first few cassette tapes which I bought in my childhood day. And basically every night I would play Alvin and the Chipmunks’ Christmas songs and follow the story lines inside until I dozed off to my dreamland.

Of all their Christmas songs, my favorites are ‘Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas’ and ‘White Christmas.’ You may be laughing, falling off your chair and asking, “What is so special about Alvin and the Chipmunks’ Christmas songs?” Frankly speaking I don’t have the answers for you too; I just find that I could relate to their singing. Is that the reason why Christmas is so special to me? This plays a big part of the memories but not all. Do you grow up listening to Alvin and the Chipmunks too?

When I was young, the employer at my mother’s working place had Christmas party almost every year and it was always such fun for my brother and I. The funny thing is I couldn’t recall the details of those parties; whether there were food or games. However, I can remember vividly that we had always received presents and I would immediately look forward to the Christmas party for next year straight after the one for that year ended.

There weren’t many, I was fortunate to go through 2-3 times, before my mother’s employer decided not to have anymore Christmas parties for their employees’ children. Those 2-3 times have a magical effect on me and it plays another big part of the fond Christmas memories.

During Christmas, my family would always gather at one of my mother’s sisters’ home for a Christmas dinner. In fact all her sisters will be at the Christmas dinner too. Children do have simple needs; food, companies and of course presents. My brother, sister and I would always have a great time at the dinner. This is the final important part of my fond Christmas memories.

If you ask me for the meaning of Christmas, I wouldn’t be able to give you a satisfactory answer. I would prefer to direct you to Wikipedia. To me, Christmas is a season of love, joy, sharing and giving. All those love and joy that I experienced when I was young and the simple gifts that I received are priceless and I will always be grateful for all those blessings. How about you? What were your fond Christmas memories?

All these lead me to think, “If every person in the World can have a good meal and a warm place to sleep for the night, at least on Christmas Day, wouldn’t that be great?” And for every child in the World to receive a present on Christmas Day; that would really bring them much joy.

What made me share this whole chunk of fond Christmas memories? I was tagged recently by Rashieka with the Spread the Christmas Spirit Tag and as I have never done tagging at this blog, I hesitated for a long time.

Spread the Christmas SpiritHowever, I can relate to this ‘Spread the Christmas Spirit Tag.’ The most meaningful part of it is to request the person being tagged to make a priceless and self-less wish, “something that money can’t buy” something that another person will treasure dearly. I am a greedy person. I have more than one wish.

I wish that every person in the World will have a good meal and a place to sleep for this Christmas. I also wish that every child in the World will have a present for this Christmas.

Do you care to share with me a priceless and self-less wish? I would not particularly tag anyone in this but I would sincerely request anyone interested to join me in this tag and send Positive Wishes or Positive Thought to others. What is your Positive Wish or Thought? Do feel free to leave your Positive Wishes or Positive Thought in the comment area.

Let Us Spread Love Wherever We Go and Symphony of Love wish everyone a Wonderful, Joyful and Loving Christmas.

I would like to leave you with White Christmas by Connie Talbot. Do you still remember her? The song from Britain’s Got Talent who sung Somewhere Over the Rainbow.

Act FAST with Stroke Symptoms can Save Lives

Today, I will be touching on a heavy topic and yet this could concern you and I and people around us. According to the National Stroke Association, Stroke is the fifth leading cause of death and is the leading cause of adult disability in America. Fortunately, according to them, “up to 80% of strokes are preventable.” Thus we have the POWER in us to prevent Stroke.

What is Stroke?

According to MayoClinic.com, “A Stroke occurs when the blood supply to a part of your brain is interrupted or severely reduced, depriving brain tissue of oxygen and nutrients. Within a few minutes, brain cells begin to die.” And according to the fact sheet by National Stroke Association, “Two million brain cells die every minute during stroke, increasing risk of permanent brain damage, disability or death. Recognizing symptoms and acting fast to get medical attention can save a life and limit disabilities.

In so speaking, acting timely is important and it can very well be the deciding factor on whether the person suffering from a stroke attack can recover completely. Therapy with clot-busting drugs must start within three hours. Quick treatment not only improves a person’s chances of survival, but may also reduce the amount of complications resulting from the stroke attack. The challenge is recognizing stroke symptoms as many are not aware of them.

How do we recognize the Stroke Symptoms?

The symptoms of Stroke include:

  • Sudden numbness or weakness of the face, arm or leg; especially on one side of the body
  • Sudden confusion, trouble speaking or understanding
  • Sudden trouble seeing in one or both eyes
  • Sudden trouble walking, dizziness, loss of balance or coordination
  • Sudden severe headache with no known cause
  • In addition to these stroke symptoms, there is also an easy test to further determine if a person has suffered from a stroke attack or are having the symptoms of Stroke. I received an email from a friend on this simple test and decided to Google for some information to check its validity. True enough, I found a few sources providing the same information.

From the National Stroke Association and from Better Health Channel, they provided this simple test call ‘F.A.S.T.’

This simple test will help you detect stroke symptoms and act F.A.S.T.

F: Facial weakness, can the person smile; have their mouth or eyes drooped?
A: Arm weakness, can the person raise both arms? Does one arm drift downward?
S: Speech difficulty, can the person speak clearly and understand what you say?
T: Time to act, act FAST and call for ambulance or paramedics immediately

According to the email, it mentioned that there is one more way to know if a person has suffered a stroke – ask the person to stick out his/her tongue (I have not been able to verify this point). If the tongue is not straight or droops or slants to one side rather than coming straight out of his/her mouth, it is an indication of a Stroke.

If the person has difficulty in performing any one of these tasks, it is likely that he/she has suffered a stroke attack and medical help should be IMMEDIATELY called for.

    Prevention of Stroke

As the saying goes, “Prevention is better than cure.” Fortunately, we do have the POWER in us to prevent stroke. Let us take a look at some of the factors which may help in preventing a stroke attack:

  • Control high blood pressure (hypertension).
  • Lower your cholesterol and saturated fat intake.
  • Don’t smoke.
  • Control diabetes.
  • Maintain a healthy weight.
  • Exercise regularly.
  • Manage stress.
  • Drink alcohol in moderation, if at all
  • For detailed information on prevention, you can go to the following websites: MayoClinic.com and National Stroke Association.

Remember, if we can act F.A.S.T with a person who has just suffered from a stroke attack by identifying the stroke symptoms, we not only save the person’s life but also improve the person’s chances of a complete recovery. Please share this F.A.S.T. It may just save someone today.

Love Actually … is all in the Mind

How often have you heard people saying, “Love is blind?” Is love really blind or does it just cloud your mind and prevent you from seeing things clearly?

Apparently scientists did not take that saying lightly. They have shown that love and desire actually start from above the neck, and not below the belt, according to a newspaper report that I read recently. In the same report, it stated that brain scan studies have shown that character judgment is impaired when a person is in love.

In one study published in August, neurobiologist Semir Zeki from the University College of London found that when people see a pleasing image, part of their brains hums with activity.

As part of the study, 18 Japanese volunteers were shown almost 150 pictures, which include former Japanese premier Junichiro Koizumi, a mobile phone and ice cream. The images were designed to stimulate their sense of desire – though not necessarily of the sexual kind – while Professor Zeki examined scans of their brains.

Findings showed that the brain sparked to life when confronted with the pictures. Pleasurable or undesirable stimuli, like attractive or ugly faces, generated almost the same response while neutral stimuli, such as inanimate objects, did not. The study certainly shed some light on one of the greatest mysteries to man.

In so speaking, is there a switch or button in the brain where we can turn on or push it to attract the person we want to attract? And in the case of many who become ‘blind’ to all the things that their loved ones did.

“Love is not blind, “It sees more and not less, but because it sees more it is willing to see less.” – Will Moss

I couldn’t have put it better than Will Moss. Do you agree with what Will Moss said? I agree with what Will Moss said and with that we should be seeing more of our loved ones and yet at the same time be willing to see less. We should be more loving to our loved ones, be more patience, more understanding and less haste to criticize.

Have you been in a situation before where you were ‘blinded’ by love? Or because of love, you choose to see less?
