Do you hear the call of the Earth?

Thich Nhat Hanh put it aptly in Zen and the Art of Saving the Planet that if we can’t see the beauty of the Earth, something is blocking the way or maybe we are so busy looking for something else we can’t hear her call. Only in silence can we hear the call of the Earth. If we do not pay attention to the here and now, we will miss her call.

An essential condition to hear the call of the Earth and respond to her is silence. If you don’t have silence in yourself, you cannot hear her call: the call of life. Your heart is calling you, but you don’t hear. You don’t have time to listen to your heart. – Thich Nhat Hanh, Introduction, Zen and the Art of Saving the Planet

Do we have silence in ourselves? Are we always here physically and yet our mind is everywhere else but here?

Mindfulness is the key to stop the distraction and to bring our mind back to the here and now. It is through paying attention to our in-breath and out-breath that we become aware of the here and now. As we pay attention fully to the breathing in and breathing out, we stop thinking about the past and we stop worrying about the future.

The dance of life happens in this moment. As Arthur Schopenhauer put it in ‘Counsels and Maxims’, “Instead, therefore, of always thinking about our plans and anxiously looking to the future, or of giving ourselves up to regret for the past, we should never forget that the present is the only reality, the only certainty…”

Yes. The present is the only reality, the only certainty; this is where the dance of life take place.
