If A Picture Paints A Thousand Words

If A Picture Paints A Thousand Words

Do you remember the song ‘If’ written by American singer-songwriter David Gates in 1971 that goes, “If a picture paints a thousand words, Then why can’t I paint you? The words will never show the you I’ve come to know.” This version of If, performed by Bread is definitely one of my favorite love songs.

The following is a portrait that I sketched of a girl I admired in the past.

Pardon me that my sketching is not even near good. When I show her the sketch, she had only one thing to say, “you made my nose looks flat.” She is so much beautiful in person.

Can you hear the ‘thousand words’ which I wanted to say in this picture when I sketched this portrait of her?

If you have not heard this song before, you can listen to it below. I am sure it will bring back a lot of memories for a lot of people.

First, I find the portrait very well done because you can see the emotion you felt in it. There’s a passion in the lines.

I had to laugh at her nose comment. Isn’t that so typical of most of us?

Yes, I remember the song. I’ve been around that long. Your sketching is actually quite good. I couldn’t do anything near that nice. I tried when I was in high school but everything I did made people laugh.

@ Bradley, there certainly was passion when I was sketching her portrait. However, I guess the passion was not enough, she was ‘angry’ with the flat nose. She has beautiful pointed nose ๐Ÿ˜€

@ CK, I love that song too.

@ Randall, thank you for the kind words. You are very good in your photography and your train model, which I couldn’t do anything near to what you are able to do too. Everyone of us is unique and special in our own ways ๐Ÿ™‚

@ Mojo, thank you for your kind words too. She is alright and happily attached now; just not attached with me. LOL! We are friends now

What a lovely sketch. You did a very nice job. I do remember the song. Although it doesn’t connect to any particular memories for me at this point, which is rather unusual.

  5. Jim

Hey SOL, her nose looks beautiful to me. Perhaps you ‘enhanced’ it a little too much for her. This is how you remember her. For sure you would have remembered my nose–so long I can touch my tongue to it!

Happy WW, thanks for peeking in on my post. I take it you watched your step while there! And yes, “pie” is a nice word for an uncouth four-letter word when cows are concerned. ๐Ÿ˜‰

@ Jim, I had done my best for the sketch ๐Ÿ™‚
I do agree with you that pie is a much better word to use than the four letters one ๐Ÿ˜‰

@ Urban, she was flattered in a way except the part about her nose ๐Ÿ˜€

@ Raven, thank you. Indeed, it is one of the songs I have always liked too. ๐Ÿ™‚

  7. dcr

Good job on the drawing. I remember the song too.

When I was in high school, a friend of mine (who went to a different high school) did a drawing in art class of a girl. He ended up giving it to a future girlfriend who, coincidentally, looked a lot like the girl he had drawn!

I think that the sketch is wonderful. Yes. I remember that song by Bread. I was only 1 when it was recorded. But it’s been played a lot in the last 37 years. Thanks for visiting mine.

I think the sketch is beautiful. That’s funny that she said that about her nose!

I do love that song. And it’s so true!

@ Allison, Thank you for the compliment. I think she said that because I did not do a good job in drawing the nose. ๐Ÿ˜‰

  13. Sue

Too bad she couldn’t have appreciated the sketch. It came out great. If someone had done that for me I would have liked it! Thanks for the song. I’m listening as I write this. Also thanks for stopping by mine ๐Ÿ™‚

You captured the softness in her face and eyes so beautifully. Sometimes people can’t see the beauty in themselves. I remember the song well!

@ kml, thank you for the compliment. You are right, some people could not see the beauty in themselves. I always share, “if there is one gift I can give to people, then it would be the gift to let them see how others see them and they will know how special they are to people around them.” ๐Ÿ™‚

  15. vhiel

it’s actually pretty good.. plus that’s why it is called a sketch.

love it though.. if somebody will sketch a photo of me.. that would be wonderful… but its the other way around.. i do the sketch for somebody..

    and I love that song…

I loved the sketch…how talented you are. And I always loved that song by “Bread.” They were one of my favorites in the early 70’s; had some beautiful hits.

  18. Brandie

Wow, I didn’t know you were such an artist! The picture is truly gorgeous! Someone mentioned puppy love, and that’s exactly what I think about when I look at this picture. You really adored her, didn’t you?

@ Sher, you have mistaken. It is not the one back in 1993. However, that was the first sketch I did. This was my third one; talk about slow production. ๐Ÿ˜‰

@ berryblitz, thank you. Yes, she is very much beautiful in person.

@ Brandie, thank you. Yes, I adored her. Did you see the love in her eyes or was it the love in my hands. ๐Ÿ˜€

  20. bluedreamer

wow youre so sweet for making her a portrait and yes i just cant hear the words i can feel it
    have a great day
its nice to be here in your blog

  21. Roland

I do remember the song and the lyrics are powerful. I can tell that you are an empathic romantic. Your sketches reveal your emotions. Very nice sketch ! As I was looking at your sketch, I recalled other tunes that resonated with me. Art Garfunkel’s ‘I Only Have Eyes for You’ and ‘I Remember You’, also sung by Terry Stafford.
It’s funny how life is a constant chase and in the end after all is said and done it is the love that we experience that matters and transcends all other experiences.

  22. Symphony of Love Post author

@ Roland, thank you. You are absolutely right that end of the day, all that matters are the love that we experience.

@ Melanei, thank you. If is one of my favourite songs too and I agree with you that the words are just wonderful.

@ Barbara, I am glad that the blog brought back a lot of memories for you and hopefully pleasant memories for you. ๐Ÿ™‚

  23. Lynn

Yeah, i know the song. It brings back good memories in the past. But i feel sad whenever i listen to that song, maybe because of its melody.

Nice sketch. Wish i can do it too.

Anyway, thanks for the comment. Happy weekend!

@ Shawie, thank you. I believe that you can sketch as well if not better than me if you want to. But we don’t need to be good in everything right? I believe there will be so many things that you are great at which I cannot do as well as you and that is how we can learn and share with each other. ๐Ÿ™‚

I am glad that you like the ebook, Symphony of Love. Quotations play a big part in my life and sharing with friends. There is so much wisdom that we can learn from quotations.

I wanted to thank you for the time you spent on my EC drop. It was very special to have a blog such as this filling that spot.

What a great post. I love to draw and I really don’t seem to take the time to do much of it. The song that was played has always been a favorite of mine. I love photography. My favorite is catching people I love in a “living” situation…not a typical smile. I often look at a picture of my son(s) and I can reflect back to that moment. Many of times I feel as if I know exactly what he is thinking. It is the pictures that have the words.

Thank you again for hanging around on my EC for the day.

  27. Symphony of Love Post author

@ Tammy, thank you. Photos are indeed magical; they sort of ‘stored up’ a part of memory at the particular instant it was taken and provided a connection for people to go back in time. ๐Ÿ™‚
