Do We Sleep with a Peace of Mind?

Do We Sleep with a Peace of Mind?

Sleeping with a peace of mindDo you have problems getting to sleep at night? No, I am not talking about insomnia – a short term or chronic inability to get high quality sleep – which can be caused by stress at work or home. Most people would have suffered insomnia at one point or other in their lives. I’m not talking about sleep apnea also, where your breathing stops or gets very shallow while you are sleeping.

I am not talking about such sleeping problems where you would be able to seek help professionally or through self-help by making changes to your lifestyles. Before I misled you further, please allow me to rephrase my sentence to make it clearer, “Do you sleep with a peace of mind at night?”

I believe most of us can sleep peacefully without waking up in cold sweat to nightmares at night. I remembered Richard Branson said something along this line, in one of his books, “Don’t do things that will cause you to have problem sleeping at night.” I couldn’t remember the exact words but I gathered he meant we must not do anything bad or against our conscience lest we will be troubled in sleep at night; we always have a choice.

As the saying goes, “To err is human.” Most of us would have made mistakes or errors in our lives. Some of them big, and continue to haunt us for life. Some of them small, and we readily forget. When we made mistakes, we must learn from them and be brave enough to face the consequences; running away is not an option.

Apparently not all people share the same thought and they will flee at the first chance. Dr. Silviu Ionescu, former Romanian diplomat in Singapore, linked to two hit-and-run accidents which killed one and left two injured is one such person. He was believed to be drunk driving when it happened. He was requested to return to Singapore for a coroner’s inquiry. However, Dr. Ionescu said his failing health was the main reason he may not return. He claimed that he could die as a result of his illness, believed to be diabetes.

He firmly denied having anything to do with the accident that killed one, or another later that day that left two people injured.

In remarks to the newspaper, Dr. Ionescu said: ‘I read in newspapers that prosecutors (in Singapore) were accusing me long before they had the right to. They should have done a preliminary inquiry first. It was clearly a sign that I shouldn’t come back.’

Ministry of Foreign Affairs spokesman said that they were puzzled by Dr. Ionescu’s comments. According to the spokesman, “…no charges have been made and no judgment has been passed on Dr. Ionescu. … He should take the opportunity to give his account of the events in order that the true circumstances surrounding the accidents may be determined.

Was he the one? I have no wish to discuss or pass judgment here because he is the only one who knows. If he was not the one, then all the more he should stand up and clear himself. If he was, then he should return to Singapore to face the consequence.

I am appalled how one can do something like that and yet sleep peacefully at night. How can he/she face others and look them in the eyes? And how can one look at himself/herself in the mirror?

Remember, we always have a choice: one that we can sleep with a peace of mind at night or one where we will be troubled for life.

The conscience is soo fascinating and powerful and never seems to give up anyway until it’s given what it wants. Everyone surely wants a peaceful night….. . May God Help us all ….This is a gloomy event

I second your desire to forgo passing judgment. I would add to that the idea that a small misdoing versus a big one is not separated in Divine mind: it is we humans who make a differentiation.

I believe that in our lives, we are either vibrating with the energy of love, or we are not.

And as you said, we have a million chances a day to choose in the direction of love.

I’ve actually been thinking a lot about this recently. I’ve been having trouble sleeping on occasion and I’ve traced it back to a few unexpected sources. It’s odd how fragile peaceful sleep can be.

Losing sleep — good topic. I do lose sleep occasionally over the state of the world. I work in politics and everyday, I get to hear about what’s not working, what’s in disarray and what’s beyond fixing. I take great comfort in knowing that I can do my part and that worrying about what others will do (or won’t do) is beyond my control.

I’ve often wondered how people who commit heinous acts could sleep with themselves. This is a sad event.

I have a REALLY hard time sleeping peacefully. I keep myself up all night wondering, worrying, stressing, and obsessing. And I often wake myself up mid-panic attack from nightmares.

I don’t feel guilty or BAD about anything in particular, but I suppose there are some parts of my past that I cant seem to ‘Put To Bed’.

That being said, since I already have a HARD TIME sleeping, I cant even begin to IMAGINE how difficult it would be for me to fall asleep IF I DID have something to legitimately Keep Me Up All Night!

@ Megan, you made a very valid point. There is no differentiation of big or small in divine mind. Well said, “We are either vibrating with the energy of love, or we are not. ”

@ Ben, indeed, how easily our sleep can be disturbed.

@ Belinda, you are absolutely right. We just have to play our part and not worry about what others will or will not do.

@ Dorothy, sad to say. I want to believe that they were not born that way.

@ Pam, indeed, I have often wondered too.

@ Gabriele, perhaps the reason of subconscious mind is what caused some to have nightmares at night.

@ Meleah, there could be many reasons why one cannot sleep peacefully at night. There are some with insomnia or sleep apnea and there are some with other medical conditions. It is a challenge for most but there will come a time where we need to let go of the past. I couldn’t imagine how they are able to do that too.

Peaceful sleep would be so nice and I can’t remember when I ever slept well, but it’s not from guilt or wrong doing. Of course I have always asked myself the same questions about people that commit such horrendous acts and then sleep like a baby. So indeed they must be without a moral conscience or really just don’t care one way or the other, but I guess that’s the same.

Our minds have the capability to be accustomed to even the most appalling acts we can do. This is the reason many people are capable of sleeping peaceful at night despite the horrors they have done to others. This has greatly puzzled me as the true nature of our conscience. 🙂

@ Jude, yes, they are pretty much the same.

@ Meleah, most probably they do not have one to begin with.

@ Walter, perhaps you are right and that would be really scary. Is that the true nature of conscience? That I do not know. I just believe that deep down within us, there is always a choice. “I am the master of my fate: I am the captain of my soul.

Hi BK .. I’m so grateful I sleep peacefully – and I like Richard Branson’s quote .. don’t do things that will cause you to have problems at night – that would mean day time too .. leading to a peaceful day on the morrow. Inthe past I’ve sweated at night and worried about work jobs, time frames etc .. but generally I sleep well and because of it don’t worry about not sleeping – I have learnt to accept that I’m where I am and if something hasn’t happened, it is simply because I haven’t been able to achieve it – I’ve done the important things .. the story I’d like to forget – I know it happens, but it disturbs me..

This is a well thought out post BK.

I don’t know how people can live with something like that on their conscience. It would be tough to live with during the day, let alone at night, when nightmares come into play.

Some people are able to compartmentalize their experiences I guess.

I get so racked with guilt that I would have to confess to anything, even if I stepped on an ant.

@ Hilary, I am grateful too and I intend to continue this peaceful sleep. That quote by Richard Branson is truly great and a constant reminder to us.

@ One of The Guys, you have mentioned something which I slipped; it would be tough to live with it during the day already, let alone at night. Just like you, I would be filled with guilt too.

@ Housewife9988, indeed, no deny of the brain cells that continue to be active even when we are sleeping. What I mean by a peaceful sleep here is to say that when we sleep, our conscience is not troubled by something which we did. 🙂

    1. Symphony of Love Post author

@ Housewife9988, there will inevitably be people who preach one thing but do another. That is something not within our control. What we can do is to believe in good and doing good.

    1. Symphony of Love Post author

@ Housewife9988, we just need to understand that there are a lot of different people in this world and we have no control over them; we cannot change them. We can only hope to inspire change in them through change in ourselves. Have a great weekend. 🙂

@ Will, you are exactly right and thank you for adding something so important which I missed out. Different people do have different levels of ethical integrity and what works on one person may not necessary works on another. Now with your addition, the whole equation has become more complicated and tricky.
